I have lived vicariously through my kids over the past decade or so, buying them some mostly Marvel classics (Infinity stuff, Apocalypse, Planet Hulk, a handful of Spider-Man). I finally broke down and bought one (House of M) for myself a year or so ago.
Yeah, I kinda just searched the web for arcs that are widely-accepted as "essential" and went from there. Next ones are probably: Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Dark Phoenix, Born Again, Civil War....
Watchmen is one of my favs, but it's grim. I'd also recommend DC's Kingdom Come and Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC's retconned Crisis a few times since, but it's worth checking out. Days of Future Past is also good (and short).
Dang, Paul, I never knew you were once a comic book guy. My estimation of you continues to grow by leaps and bounds, if such a thing were possible!!
I have that Invaders issue in my collection. It warms my heart to see it again. LOL

Oh, almost forgot, Batman Year One. Good companion to Dark Knight Returns.
I’ve got Watchmen (comic was dark and great, movie was long and mid, HBO series was elite). I’ll add those others.
Just remembering your closet door plastered with superheroes of your creation. Don't remember a lot of abs.
